
Ash is one of the most committed musicians I’ve ever known — and one of my longest-standing collaborators. We met playing in a big band at 15 and haven’t stopped since: busking on the streets of Perth, uni gigs, London house shares, cruise ship MD work, and late-night recording sessions that still carry through today.
He’s a phenomenal bass player with huge ears and a deep sensitivity that lifts every band in. But it’s more than that. Ash is a passionate multi-instrumentalist, electronic producer, podcast creator, composer, and audio editor — someone who constantly reiterating and asking the ‘why’ of what he’s making. From festivals, theatre pits to nerdy double bass deep-dives, West African collaborations to commissioned scores, he’s never chosen the easiest path — but always the honest one.
Ashley de Neef is an Australian bassist, composer, and producer known for his innovative fusion of jazz and world music. Based in Melbourne, his work often explores the intersections of rhythm, improvisation, and cross-cultural collaboration.
A graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), de Neef completed an Honours thesis titled Explorations in Double-Stops, which examined the expanded role of the double bass in jazz ensembles through the use of double-stops—playing two notes simultaneously .
